What Is Limit Holdem?

Limit holdem is a variation of Texas Holdem which offers a fixed betting structure. Whereas in no limit holdem, you can bet as much as you want up to and including the size of your stack, and with pot limit holdem you can bet up to the current size of the pot, with limit holdem your bets are totally prescribed, where the limit is much lower than these other two formats.

In limit holdem, the betting structure is determined by the size of the prescribed stakes. For instance, in a $1/$2 limit holdem game, the lower amount is the big blind size as well as the limit for flop betting, while the larger number is the betting amount for the turn and river.

So play starts out with the posting of the blinds, which in this case would be $0.50 for the small blind and $1 for the big blind. Once again, the smaller number in the prescribed stakes represents the big blind amount, with the small blind generally being half of that.

In limit poker, there is a maximum number of raises that are permitted. This is a bet and a maximum of either 3 or 4 raises, depending on the poker room. Once the maximum amount of raises has been reached though, no further raising is permitted and the players left in the hand must either call this amount or fold.

During the pre-flop and flop betting rounds, the bet size is the smaller of the two numbers, with the pre-flop having this as the big blind amount, which is essentially a forced bet giving players the option to call the big blind, or raise it. So in our example of $1/$2, the bet size is $1 and the raises would involve increments of that, meaning $2, then $3, then $4.

On the turn and the river, the larger of the two prescribed amounts becomes the betting size, so in other words if it’s a $1/$2 game, you now must bet $2. The raises follow in turn according to the initial bet size, so in this case it would be a raise to $4, then $6, then $8.

One of the real features of limit holdem is that it is correct to call a great deal more often than what you usually see in no limit or pot limit games. This is especially true the more people that are in the hand. The main reason for this is that you generally get a lot higher pot odds to call, meaning that the cost to do so is generally a lower percentage of the pot than you usually see in big bet poker.

So if there is $10 in the pot and it only costs you $2 to call, you need a lot less of a hand to make sense of this call than you would if you had to call the size of the pot, for instance. If you only have a 1 in 4 chance to hit your hand and win, you will make money in the long run from calling this $2 bet in limit poker, but will lose money having to put in the larger amounts that you would normally see in no limit or pot limit.

Why Is NLHE More Popular Than Limit?

Back before online poker started, limit poker used to be by far the most popular form of poker in the brick and mortar card rooms and casinos. Due to the nature of live play, with a fairly limited amount of potential players to draw upon, what ended up happening with no limit poker is that the money flowed from the weaker players to the stronger ones much too fast, which ended up killing off the games.

In other words, the fish went broke so fast that there were fewer and fewer of them, until it got to the point that there wasn’t even enough players to run a single table at even the smaller limits that were run in these card rooms.

So in spite of the fact that no limit holdem can be more exciting, and the potential for winning or losing money was much higher per amount of buy in, this game really wasn’t all that suited for live games. Even today, most of the live cash games you see is of the limit holdem variety.

The basics of Limit Texas Holdem are identical to No Limit or Pot Limit Holdem; the difference between the different formats is in the betting limits, and the amount of the blinds.
